The prestigious Premier’s Design Award was presented to Melbourne-based brand communications agency, Local Peoples for their innovative Nike+Nine Project. The judges selected the Nike+Nine Project for its seamless integration of physical and digital interactive technologies that resulted in a truly innovative retail experience.

The design parameters of the project were very challenging and the end product was a unique showcase of excellence in design and innovation.

Open for the duration of the 2012 Olympics Games in London, Nike+Nine allowed people to see the latest Nike products and innovations being used by athletes during the Games while adhering to the strict International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) media blackout rule.

“This was a very clever design solution and provided customers with an exciting retail experience,” said Dr. Brandon Gien the CEO of Good Design Australia, the organisation that runs the Premier’s Design Awards on behalf of the Victorian Government.

“The design team transformed an empty shell into an interactive display by day and a fully functional physical and digital retail space by night. All this was done under very tight IOC media constraints adding an extra design dimension to the project,” said Dr. Gien

Average sales at the pop-up store were up 52 per cent on the national average – an extremely positive result that directly reflected the success of the innovative design strategy.

The Premier’s Design Awards recognise and reward Victorian designers and businesses using exemplar design effectively and sustainably. The program attracted a record number of high quality applications in 2013 that showcase the breadth and diversity of design, creativity and innovation currently flourishing in Victoria.
